Musical Prodigy visits UW Oshkosh

Twelve-year-old jazz pianist Joey Alexander and the Joey Alexander Trio kicked off the UW Oshkosh music department’s 48th season of the Chamber Art Series on Sept. 12. Students for Music arranges the Chamber Art Series, and its secretary Katie Warren said each show will have something unique about it. “You never know what will move you until you allow yourself to experience it,” Warren said. The Joey Alexander Trio sets itself apart by its leader, Alexander, a young pianist from Indonesia who has played in 17 different countries and has been featured on the Today Show. Sophomore Braden Schmidt said he was impressed by the amount of talent in such a young artist. “He just gets it,” Schmidt said. “I was just blown away by his level of musicianship.” Schmidt said he enjoyed the chemistry between the artists, and how Alexander can sway and communicate with the others. “Those guys are different ages and from different places, but they can sit down and play together,” Schmidt said. “That’s what music is all about.” Alexander said one of his favorite parts about performing is having fun with his band mates, Russell Hall and Mark Whitfield Jr., who play bass and drums, respectively. He also said students benefit from hearing live music. “It’s the best feeling and the best sounds,” Alexander said. “It’s relaxing and can be energizing.” Warren said another reason students should attend more music events this year is because they are a way for students to get away from things that are causing them stress. “Music is shown to be one of the best ways to alleviate stress and enhance your mood,” Warren said. “It’s a way to get away from everything for an hour or two and enjoy.” Warren said the Chamber Art Series will give students a chance to be exposed to a variety of new music. “We strive to provide our audience with the most diverse, enjoyable and highest of quality performances,” Warren said. “It is definitely a series that they won’t want to miss.” Pianist Teresa Walters will perform at the next Chamber Art Series event on Wednesday, Sept. 30 at 7:30 p.m.
