“Q&A with D3football.com 2015 First Team Preseason All-American and UW Oshkosh tight end Joe Sommers
What are you looking to get out of your senior season with the UW Oshkosh football team?
JOE SOMMERS: A conference championship and a season of great memories with my teammates that happen to be some of my best friends.
What are some of the areas that you are looking improve in your game this year?
JS: I am always looking to be more proficient as a route runner and especially focused on finishing blocks.
You were named to the 2015 D3football.com preseason All-American team. What do you have to do this year to validate the first-team selection?
JS: Just make plays for the team whenever my number is called on. We have a lot of depth with a number of play makers.
You spent time with the Dallas Cowboys and Minnesota Vikings during the offseason. How was that experience, and how do you think you did?
JS: It was a very honoring experience, quite the eye opener. I thought I did just fine but definitely know that I have more to show as a football player, and am very excited to do so this year on film.
What did they say to you?
JS: They just said to work hard and focus on this season and leave everything on the film.
After enrolling at UW-Milwaukee, why did you decide to transfer to UWO and return to football?
JS: My passion for football just took over. I couldn’t take being away from the game. There isn’t a sport like it, so I decided why not play as long as I can?
Who has helped you the most during your football career?
JS: My dad. He has taught me everything I know, has been a great motivator and has always been there when I needed to talk things out.
What is your favorite part of the game-day experience at UWO?
JS: Just playing with my best friends. There is nothing better than competing with your buddies. Nothing like a great win with the brothers you love.
What improvements have you seen with Brett Kasper, entering his second year as the Titans’ quarterback?
JS: His confidence has risen and directly affected his game. He knows how good he is now, and it is going to show this year
What have you seen from Wisconsin transfer Connor Senger, and how could he help the team this season?
JS: His feet are very quick and smooth, he is a hard worker and wants the team to win. He gives us depth at the QB position, which you can never have enough of.
What has to happen for UW Oshkosh football to return to the playoffs and contend for a Stagg Bowl in 2015?
JS: We have to win each and every day and focus on executing. If we don’t beat ourselves, we will be just fine.
