A two-day water rescue and recovery effort on Lake Poygan has resulted in one fatality and one person being hospitalized.
Just after 4:30 p.m. Oct. 4, the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the Bay Lane Boat Launch at the mouth of the Wolf River for a report of a boater in distress. Deputies pulled the man from the water, and he was transported to a hospital with injuries that are not considered life-threatening.
Deputies on scene then spoke with another boater and learned that a second man was unaccounted for and presumed to be still in the water. The Winnebago County Dive/Rescue Team, Drone Team, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and multiple area fire departments responded to assist with the search.
The mission transitioned to a recovery effort the following morning, and the deceased body was recovered in the early afternoon.
“His identity is known but is being withheld pending notification of family members,” the Sheriff’s office said.
Officials in Winnebago County continue to investigate the incident.
The Boom Bay Fire Department, Winneconne-Poygan Fire Department, Poy Sippi Fire Department and First Responders, Fremont Ambulance and First Responders, Omro-Rushford Fire Department and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources all assisted at the scene.
