Renovations to UW Oshkosh’s Clow Social Science Center will conclude in time for the spring semester of 2016. UWO Planning Director JoAnn Rife said the renovation on the buildings are nearing the end of phase one. “Contractors are in the process of completing the finish work [painting, carpet, tile and cabinetry] throughout the building for [part] 1 of PHASE 1,” Rife said. Rife said there have not been any major setbacks since the project commenced, nor have there been any major changes or additions to the original design. According to Rife, phase one of construction is due for completion by spring semester 2016 for the Clow Classroom, Clow Faculty and Clow Lecture Hall buildings. Phase two for the Nursing and Education building is expected to be completed by mid-July 2016. Rife said under phase two, the spaces in the Nursing and Education building where the College of Nursing offices are will be converted into general access classrooms. The classrooms that are currently in the building will still be used during the 2016 spring semester. “We will be installing furniture after that time, but we will be ready for spring semester,” Rife said. “Also, our department is working closely with the general contractors, so we are able to allow [the] College of Nursing to hold their interim boot camp in their new labs.” UWO junior Eric Asborn said he is looking forward to seeing and taking classes in the completed Clow building during spring semester. “I have heard good things about the new building, and from what I can see from the outside, it seems to be coming along pretty good, so I am excited to see the finished product in spring,” Asborn said. Writing Center director and senior lecturer in the English department Crystal Mueller said she believes her classroom instruction will continue to be enhanced as she works with the technology and discovers with her students different ways to enrich their collective experience. “Technology is more and more a part of our world, and it’s exciting to see that trickling into the classroom,” Mueller said. According to the UW Oshkosh Projects in Design report, the total budget for the renovation is $28,300,300. Rife said this number has not changed since the construction started. Asborn said he had no idea how much money was going into the renovations. “I didn’t realize what a large amount of money was being spent, but I suppose with all of the [costs] that go into renovating an academic building, it must add up pretty quick,” Asborn said. “With the amount of money being spent, I expect the building to [be] pretty nice and filled with the latest technologies.” According to Rife, with the project being on schedule, she expects there will be minor items, such as paint touch up, that might need to be addressed after the building reopens. “Generally it takes about one year after substantial completion to get all items on a punch list completed to our satisfaction,” Rife said. “We are a picky bunch.”
