UW Oshkosh’s men’s tennis improved its home record to 5-1 after a commanding win over Milwaukee School of Engineering, 8-1, at Kolf Sports Center Outdoor Courts. Head coach James Lewison said competing outdoors has different variables players have to consider and loves the comradery that isn’t offered indoors. “Playing outdoors allows the fans to get more involved and the energy level is greater than when we are inside since spectators are separated by glass windows,” Lewison said. “I love seeing all of the parents, other student-athletes and alumni gathering on the bleachers.” The Titans won all but one match, which came in the first flight of singles where sophomore Vincent Gorski lost the tiebreaker to John Price, 6-2, 5-7, (10-7). Freshmen Ryan Kuzmanovic and Adam Hawley, junior Adam Martin, and sophomore Logan Zastrow took the following four flights in singles. In the second and third flight, Kuzmanovic handled Tom Smith, 6-1, 6-2, while Martin dominated Kyle Fassbender, 6-1, 6-2. Regarding the fourth and fifth flight, Hawley crushed Ryan Runke, 6-0, 6-1, while Zastrow triumphed over Tyler Haanen, 6-0, 6-1. According to Kuzmanovic, he and his competition were evenly matched. However, he said he believes he had a better game-plan; before the game he assessed the weather and altered his approach. “There was a lot of wind that day, so I had to adjust,” Kuzmanovic said. “I won because I was better adjusted.” The final singles match scored 6-4, 6-0, between junior Austin Laumb and Austin Fite. Laumb thinks his team’s improvement is the reason for their recent success. “We improved on our mindset and getting the ball in play,” Laumb said. “I think we lost a couple of our matches early on that if we were to do over again we would be able to win. The team has greatly improved on our unforced errors which has allowed us the ability to capitalize on more points.” The tennis team’s next match is on Friday, April 22 against UW-Whitewater at Kolf Sports Center Outdoor Courts.
