The University of Wisconsin Oshkosh baseball team bounced back from four conference losses over the weekend.
On April 15 the Titans traveled to Winona, Minnesota to take on St. Mary’s University in a game that ended in an 11-11 tie in the 10th inning due to darkness.
The game included a three-run homer from both junior Johnny Eagan and sophomore Noah Polcyn.
UWO kept a steady scoring pace through the fourth inning where the game was tied 5-5. The Titans then went scoreless from the fifth to the seventh inning, allowing St. Mary’s to score one run in the fifth inning, giving the Cardinals a 5-6 lead.
In the top of the eighth inning, Eagan’s three-run homer gave the Titans an 8-6 lead, but St. Mary’s managed to bat in five runs to take back the lead 8-11.
At the top of the ninth, Polcyn had his first career home run that brought in three runs to tie the game at 11, resulting in the final score.
The Titans then traveled to La Crosse to take on the UW-La Crosse Eagles in a four game weekend series on Saturday April 16 and 17 where the Eagles managed to win all four games.
“It was unfortunate that we couldn’t come away with a win, but we learned a lot from that series,” sophomore pitcher Jesse Sustachek said.
In the first game on Saturday the Eagles won 7-1 in a game where the Titans only score came at the top of the fourth inning after a solo home run from senior outfielder Robbie Kleman.
The Titans lost game two by a much larger margin than game one with a score of 2-15.
Game two was close through the fifth with a score of 2-5 in favor of the Eagles, but in the sixth inning, the Titans went scoreless while the Eagles managed to bring in 10 runs.
After the sixth inning the score was 2-15 and after a scoreless seventh frame from the Titans, the game was called due to the 10-run rule.
The Eagles came into the weekend first place in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a record of 8-0 and 18-5 overall.
Despite the two losses on Sunday, catcher Taylor Grimm said the team is still somewhat pleased with how much closer the games were.
“I think we really did show that we can compete,” Grimm said.
The Eagles took game one by a score of 10-9 in a game that went back and forth throughout.
Through six innings the Titans had the lead at 4-3.
In the top of the seventh inning the Titans scored two more runs, but the Eagles managed to bring in four runs that would give them the lead at 4-7.
The Eagles managed to keep the Titans from scoring in the eighth inning while they brought in one run.
At the top of the ninth, Klehman hit a three run home run that gave the Titans a 9-8 lead as they went into the bottom of the ninth.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Eagles first baseman Justin Anderson had a two run double that gave La Crosse the win at 10-9.
The Eagles took game two by a score of 10-7 in a game where the Titans never had the lead.
After trailing 8-0 going into the sixth inning, senior Trent Whitcomb put the Titans on the board with an RBI followed by a double that brought in two runs from Grimm and a solo home run from Eagan to put the score 8-4.
In the top of the seventh, Whitcomb hit a three-run home run that brought the Titans within one.
However, after an RBI and a score off a walk in the bottom of the seventh, the Eagles brought the eventual final score to 10-7.
Despite not being able to win a game all weekend, head coach Kevin Tomasiewicz said the team did some good things.
“We are on the brink of being a really good team,” Tomasiewicz said. “We got to realize that we are that close.”
The Titans earned another much needed win on Tuesday (April 19) after winning their first home game of the season against Ripon College at Tiedemann Field 8-1.
An RBI from Titans’ catcher Neil Ori in the second frame tied up the game at one, with a solo home run from rightfielder Alex Koch in the third frame gave the Titans the lead. A lead that they kept for the rest of the game.
After scoring one run in the sixth and five in the seventh frame, which included a triple from Kleman that brought in two runs, the Titans extended the lead to what would be the eventual final score of 8-1.
The 10-13-1 Titans had a 16-3 dominating win Wednesday, April 20, against the Vikings of Lawrence University at Whiting Field.
Through four innings, the Titans had the lead 9-3.
All three of the Vikings’ scores came in the third inning.
After the Titans scored six runs in the seventh frame that included a two run homer from Titans’ outfielder Robbie Kleman, the lead was extended to 16-3. After a scoreless seventh inning the game was called due to the 10-run rule.
UWO will face UW-Whitewater in a doubleheader on April 23 in Whitewater.
