The UW Oshkosh women’s golf team will have a new face at the helm of the Titans as they begin their 2023 season Sept. 9 at the UW-Eau Claire Georgianni Blugold Invitational.
Tyler Cassmeyer was named head coach of the Titans on Aug. 11, becoming just the seventh head coach in the history of the program.
“I am honored to be the head women’s golf coach at UW Oshkosh and am excited to bring my unique style of coaching to Titan Athletics,” Cassemeyer said. “I would like to thank both Darryl Sims and Abby Gildernick for the opportunity to join this historic program and look forward to competing for UWO’s next national championship.”
“We are thrilled to have Tyler [Cassmeyer] join Titan Athletics,” UWO Athletic Director Darryl Sims said. “He brings a new perspective on the sport of golf and is committed to building a highly competitive team.”
Cassmeyer graduated from Lindenwood University (Missouri) in 2022 with a bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science and minors in both Nutrition and Coaching. Cassemeyer played baseball for Lindenwood, where he was the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Freshman of the Year and an All-MIAA Second Team member in 2018.
“I grew up playing golf, and then I also played baseball of course so I have that background and athletic ability,” Cassmeyer said. “During my time in the summer, I would help coach golf, basketball and baseball back home.”
Cassmeyer said that his experience coaching multiple sports has taught him a lot.
“I have learned that everything is different, and we need to individualize everything we do,” he said. “Whether that be in the weight room or on and off the course, we need to remember that every player is different and has different needs.”
Cassmeyer and the Titans will look to improve after a disappointing season in 2022. UWO finished dead last at the 2022 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships, shooting +203 as a team at the event. UW-Whitewater took home the conference title last year, shooting +107 as a team at the WIAC Championships.
The best team finish the Titans had last season was a first place finish in the UW Oshkosh Titan Classic where the team shot +119, edging out UW-Stevens point who shot +131. The Titans never finished above fifth place in any of the other tournaments they participated in last season.
Leading UWO on the course this season will be senior Ava Downie, who shot a team-low 258 at the WIAC Championships, placing 25th in the event. Last year, Downie took second-place in the UWO Titan Classic, ninth in the UW-Eau Claire Invitational and fourth in the UW-Stevens Point Invitational.
Cassmeyer said he is most excited about the opportunity to turn around the golf program.
“In the past we haven’t had that much success so hopefully in the near future we can do something to make it better and build a team-first environment,” He said. “I know golf is more of a selfish sport where we individualize everything, but building that team-first mentality with this program will help out a lot.”
UWO will kick off its 2023 season at the UW-Eau Claire Georgianni Blugold Invitational starting at 12:30 p.m. Sept. 9 in Altoona and continuing through Sept. 10. Last year, the Titans took sixth place in the event, shooting +117.
