The UW Oshkosh men’s wrestling team took sixth place at the WIAC Championships, winning three matches and scoring 8.5 team points.
UW-La Crosse won its ninth straight WIAC Championship, scoring 158.5 points, and winning five titles. UW-Eau Claire took second place, scoring 147.5 points, and winning four titles. UW-Whitewater followed behind the Blugolds in third place, scoring 132.5 points, with Dominik Mallinder winning the 133-lb bracket.
For the Titans, Garth Martell took sixth place in the 285-lb bracket after going 1-3 on the day. Martell had a first-round bye but lost his first match by technical fall to Michael Douglas of UWL. Douglas went on to win the tournament at 285-lbs, and is the number one ranked wrestler at heavyweight, according to the National Wrestling Coaches Association.
Martell won his second match by a 3-1 decision over Alex Ashauer of UW-Platteville, but lost his next match by a 5-1 decision to Blake Flach of UW-Stevens Point. This put Martell into the fifth place match at 285-lbs, where he lost a 7-5 decision to Issak Smith of UWW.
Additional Oshkosh wins came at 141-lbs, where Brody Toledo defeated fellow Titan teammate Logan Harel by pin. Roman Martell won his second match of the day in an 8-5 decision over Logan Neitzel of UWSP.
The UWO men’s wrestling team will be back in action on Feb. 28th for the NCAA Division III Upper Midwest Regional Championship, hosted by Augsburg University (Minnesota).
