The UW Oshkosh men’s wrestling team fell to UW-Whitewater 38-9 on the road on Thursday, Nov. 8, at Kachel Gymnasium in the Titans’ first WIAC match of the season.
The match would start off with 125-pound Brady Phelps of UWW versus JP Culver of UWO, which resulted in a fall at 2:41 minutes into the match. The 133-pound Warhawk Jordan Rasof took the win against Oshkosh’s Ryan Hanson with a technical fall of 19-4.
In the 141-pound matchup, Justin Fortugno of UWW would take on UWO’s Logan Harel, which resulted in a technical fall of 22 points to 5 points difference in a UWW win. In match four, it was the Titans’ Jacob Ward who took on Lucio Morgan of UWW, which resulted in a fall at the 4:12 minute mark, resulting in a UWO win. The last regulation win by the Titans came from Richie Amakirki, weighing at 197 pounds, against Warhawk Tyler Haydon, who took the decision 9-5, moving onto extras. Warhawk Jack O’Conner would spoil the match against UWO Dominick Girardin in an 8-7 point decision, resulting in a Warhawk win in extras. In extras, Titans Garth Martell took the major decision win by 16 points to 3 points against UWW Hunter Szyskiewicz. Following up would be Camden Harm, who took the win by pinning Owen Kooima of UWW.
On Saturday, the Titans competed at the Lakeland University Muskie Scramble on Nov 8. Leading it off in men’s 125A, Culver took fifth place, collecting two falls along with one technical fall and one decision in the match tournament. Moving onto 125B, UWO’s Nick Ersland took first place with a 19 to 7 major decision against Elijah Torres of Concordia University, also collecting one fall along with one technical fall, and a decision.
In 141A, Harel took seventh place. On the other hand, in 141B Wyatte Nicholson took third place, collecting one major decision along with one technical fall and a default of 6 to 4 against Greco Renden of Harper College. Moving on to 149B, Titan Leonardo Ruggiero took fifth place, collecting one fall along with a technical fall and one decision. In 157B, Titan Caidan Ronning took on Noah Ludwig in a 5-2 decision, resulting in his third-place finish on the way he collected one fall and one technical fall. Moving on to match 165B, UWO’s Elijah Matzke took seventh place. In the 197A, Titan Desmond Walker took seventh place. In 197B, Richie Amakiri took on Griffin Schultz of Luther in a 13-9 decision, resulting in his first-place win. In the last match of the tournament, 285B Titans Deacon Allen took ninth place.
Overall, the Titans collected two first-place finishers and two third-place finishes. The Titans look to their next big meet, the Chancellor’s Cup at home on Wednesday Nov. 12 against the No. 17-ranked UW-Eau Claire Bluegolds at 7 p.m.
