The spring season kicked off on April 11 for the UW-Oshkosh women’s tennis team, as the Titans swept Concordia University of Wisconsin 7-0 at the CUW Tennis Courts in Mequon.
In doubles competition, UWO held the Falcons to eight total points across the three matches, with junior Olivia Pethan and senior Courtney Carpenter holding CUW’s Payton Steward and Taylor Weiner scoreless in No. 1 doubles. The No. 2 match saw junior Kayla Gibbs and sophomore Brianna Owens defeating Abigail Haley and Katelyn de Guzman 6-4, while the No. 3 match had freshman Taylor Longdin and sophomore Mana Usui taking the victory over Ruth Dolde and Samantha Mudra by the same score.
Usui got the first singles victory in the meet, defeating Steward in the No. 1 singles match 6-1, 6-0. Pethan followed suit in No. 2 singles, winning the match 6-0, 6-1 over Dolde.
No. 6 singles saw freshman Rachael Carroll notch the 6-4, 6-1 win against Mudra. Junior Cate Gerl picked up the win in No. 5 singles with a 6-3, 6-3 finish over Taylor Weiner, while Owens took the 6-3, 6-4 win over de Guzman in No. 4 singles action.
Extra points were needed in the No. 3 singles matchup between Gibbs and Haley. After dropping set one 6-0, Gibbs came back in the second set to win 7-6 and forcing a tie-breaking third. The third set would go in UWO’s favor, with Gibbs taking the set 10-5, and winning the match in the process.
UWO is back on the tennis courts on April 19, as their spring tour has the black and gold heading to Madison West High School to face Edgewood University. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m.
