In the first round of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Tournament, the UW-Oshkosh women’s tennis team fell to UW-Eau Claire by a 4-0 decision at the John and Fay Menard YMCA Tennis Center on April 21.
The WIAC Tournament matches follow the play until decision format, where two teams compete until a team reaches four team points. When that occurs, the meet ends and all remaining matchups are labeled as unfinished instead of a normal dual’s play to completion format.
No. 2 doubles was the lone match to not go into tiebreakers, as junior Kayla Gibbs and sophomore Brianna Owens were defeated by Delaney Hanson and Kiera Schmid 6-1. Sophomore Mana Usui and freshman Sarah Schaeffer lost the No. 3 doubles flight to Morgan Briggman and Stella Platt 7-6, after losing the tiebreaker 8-6. UWEC would win the No. 1 doubles match, as senior Courtney Carpenter and junior Olivia Pethan fell to Reese Burton and Beatriz Felchak 7-6 after dropping the tiebreaker 10-8.
In singles action, Gibbs lost the No. 3 match to Aubrey Wittwer 6-1, 6-0. No. 5 singles saw junior Cate Gerl fall to Hanson 6-1, 6-2. Schaeffer, playing in No. 6 singles, dropped a 6-1, 6-1 decision to Briggman, to seal UWEC’s victory. The No. 1, 2, and 4, matches, featuring Usui, Pethan, and Owens, were marked as unfinished.
Oshkosh finishes the year 7-6 overall, marking the fourth winning-record season in a row. The last time UWO accomplished this feat was when the Titans accrued seven winning seasons in a row, from the 1994-95 season to the 2000-01 season.
