The Oshkosh Police Department is investigating an incident involving juveniles who displayed a handgun near Oshkosh West High School.
Shortly before noon on Sept. 5, police responded to a report of a male with a handgun at a skate park. The park is located at 1570 Taft Ave., across from Oshkosh West High School. The school was briefly placed on lockdown while officers investigated the report.
Police determined the weapon was a BB gun. Four juveniles were identified as those involved in the incident.
The case is being referred to the Winnebago County District Attorney’s Office for possible criminal charges. No specific charges have been announced yet.
“Facsimile or replica handguns can be easily mistaken for real firearms,” said Oshkosh Police Sgt. Kyle Roberts. “This can quickly escalate situations and lead to potentially tragic outcomes during disturbances.”
The Oshkosh Police Department is urging parents to understand the risks of children having replica weapons.
Anyone with information about the incident should contact the Oshkosh Police Department at 920-236-5700 or Winnebago County Crime Stoppers at 920-231-8477.
