Local man suffers gunshot wound near UWO

A 47-year-old man was flown to UW-Hospital in Madison after he was found with a life-threatening gun shot wound to the head. Oshkosh Police received reports Wednesday at 12:05 a.m. of the man sitting in a vehicle near the 600 block of North Main Street with a wound from a small caliber handgun. The man originally was taken to Theda Clark Hospital for life threatening injuries, and then transported to the UW-Hospital in Madison where there is no update on his condition, according to Officer Joseph Nichols of the Oshkosh Police Department. “This is a random incident,” Nichols said. “This isn’t someone running around waving a gun.” The incident took place behind a business in a parking lot on North Main Street near the intersection of Main Street and Butler Avenue, according to Nichols. “People should go in numbers and not by themselves no matter what,” Nichols said. “It’s important that people remain safe and vigilant.” UW Oshkosh declined to comment, as this is an Oshkosh Police Department on-going investigation. “We have canvased the area talking to local businesses,” Nichols said. “We are looking to talk to any citizens who may have seen something and not talked to the police yet.” Despite the incident taking place so close to campus, students are not concerned. “I’m not worried,” UWO student Erikah Lange said. “I feel like it was an isolated incident.” If anyone has information regarding this incident they are asked to call the Oshkosh Police Department at 920-236-5700 or Crime Stoppers at 920-231-8477.
