The UW Oshkosh women’s volleyball team won its third consecutive game against UW-Eau Claire on Oct. 10 improving its record to 17-5 overall and 4-0 in conference. Oshkosh remains the only team to be undefeated in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference as it sits atop of the conference with a two-game lead. It was Homecoming week and alumni night for Eau Claire, and junior Nerissa Vogt said there was a lot of intensity in the atmosphere. “Their bleachers were packed,” Vogt said. “They came out with a ton of energy.” The Blugolds used the momentum to score the last five out of six points in the first set to take an early 1-0 lead. Freshman Tina Elstner said she is fully aware of how the team struggles in the beginning of each match. “We don’t start off super strong,” Elstner said. “No matter good team or bad team, we need to finish and play to the best of our ability.” UWO used leads of 15-7 and 20-9 to defeat Eau Claire by 11 in the second set. The Titans never trailed in set three as they held the Blugolds to a negative hitting percentage while scoring the last three points from two consecutive service aces by Vogt and a block by junior Lexi Thiel. In the fourth set, Eau Claire was able to come within 21-15, but Oshkosh scored its next four points off of errors and went on to win 3-1 with sets of 21-25, 25-14, 25-14 and 25-20. Senior Katelyn Malcheski led the Titans with 13 kills. Thiel totaled 35 assists and senior Mandy Trautmann recorded 25 digs. Out of the four conference games this year, Elstner has recorded 24 kills and Schaefer said her performance has not gone unnoticed. “Tina has come on really strong lately,” Schaefer said. “She is taking advantage of playing time and has done really well.” The UW Oshkosh Invitational begins on Oct. 16 which features seven different teams. The Titans first match of the UW Oshkosh Invitational is on Friday, Oct. 16 at 7:30 p.m. against regional opponet Illinois Wesleyan University.
