It was a successful trip to McPhee Physical Education Center in Eau Claire Nov. 23 for the UW Oshkosh women’s wrestling team as they took part in the UW-Eau Claire 8-Women Battles. Titans freshman Alivia Davey won the 207-lb. bracket and freshman Myra Bair and Ella Creighton finished third place in their respective weight brackets.
Davey started her day off strong, picking up a victory against UW-Stevens Point’s Marna Andre by fall in 1:01. In the semifinals, Davey defeated Savannah Sistad from Simpson College (Iowa) by decision 8-0 and was onto the finals where she won by decision 3-0 against Morgan Miller from Simpson College (Iowa).
In the opening round of the 103-lb. bracket, Bair fell short of a victory as she was pinned in 1:28 by Simpson’s Emma Watson. Bair’s next match took place in the third round against Aroura Preston from Buena Vista University (Iowa) which she won by fall in 3:38, and the winning continued as she hastily won in round four, pinning Sofia Meza from Loras University (Iowa) in 31 seconds. In round five, Bair was defeated by decision 5-0 by Amelia Hermanson of Augsburg University (Minnesota).
Creighton’s day in the 180-lb. bracket started with a match against Illinois Wesleyan University’s Sifa Feruzi which she won by decision 5-2. That win meant she was on to the semifinals, where she lost by decision 5-2 against Simpson’s Kassidee Savaria. In the third and fourth place match, Creighton was able to prevail against Augsburgs Katie Whelan 2-1 to claim third place in the 180 lb. bracket.
Titan freshman Audrey Swiderek picked up a victory against Augsburg’s Gisele Gallegos by decision 9-5 for a fifth place finish in the 110-lb. bracket.
In the 117-lb. bracket, UWO had three different representatives, freshman Emma Hady, who finished sixth, freshman Delaney Rapp and junior Kaije Youngstrom who clashed for seventh place, which ended with a Youngstrom victory by fall in 4:04.
Freshman Annesley Day represented the Titans in the 124-lb. bracket where a victory against UW-Stevens Points Margaret Gillmore put her in the semifinals. Day lost in the semifinals to Simpson’s Ashley Cannon and then lost in the third place match to Stevens Point’s Amelia Adams leading to a fourth place finish.
UWO freshman Paige Haaf was the second Titan to place fourth on the day as she defeated Vaness Elexpuru of Simpson in the 131-lb. A bracket, and eventually lost in third place match by technical fall 10-0 to Makenna Hanke.
In the 145-lb. bracket, UWO freshman Keara Micek placed eighth after losing all three of her matches by pinfall.
Oshkosh freshman Leah Schwenker was the third Titan of the day to finish fourth in their respective bracket. Schwenker picked up a victory in the opening round of the 160-lb. bracket against Attalia Cano of Lakeland University by forfeit.
Next on the schedule for the UWO women’s wrestling team is a tough battle against No. 24 nationally ranked Northern Michigan University at the Kolf Sports Center at 6 p.m. Dec. 6.
