Women’s track takes fourth in La Crosse

On Friday, April 18, the UW Oshkosh women’s track 99.5 points to take fourth place at the Esten Challenge in La Crosse. The Titans scored UWO had two athletes place and score in the 800-meter run. Senior Kylee Verhasselt finished third in 2:14.68, while freshman Isabella Tremonti ran a 2:20.5 to place seventh. In the 4×100 meter relay, Oshkosh took fourth place with a time of 48.52 seconds. Junior Caitlyn McCormick placed eighth and scored a point for the Titans in the 400-meter dash, finishing in 59.08 seconds. Junior Megan Geldernick finished in sixth place for the 400-meter hurdles, running a time of 67.48 seconds. “My 400 hurdles was my opener for the year,” Geldernick said. “It wasn’t bad; it was a good start. It got me in for conference.” In the 3000-meter steeplechase, junior Rhea Fiorita placed fourth in 12:43.29. Freshman Emily Reichenberger ran a 25.67 200-meter dash to finish eighth. Senior Sonny Jenkins placed in the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:44.68. The Titans’ 4×400-meter relay team finished first in 3:55.57. In the 10,000-meter run, sophomore Leah Rendflesh ran a time of 39:21.60 to place fifth. Junior Kasey Ederer was the high jump champion, reaching a height of 1.66 meters. The Titans were able to place two competitors in the long jump. Senior Samantha Blue jumped 5.23 meters to finish eighth. Freshman Karina Marchan placed third with a jump of 5.48 meters. Despite her success, Marchan is aware of what she needs to improve on to perform even better. “I didn’t run through the board all the way when I jumped,” Marchan said. “I dipped my hips, but I have a lot to work on.” Coach Ben Dorsey was proud of how Marchan jumped. “Karina had a great day jumping”, Dorsey said. Oshkosh had success in the triple jump as well. Seniors Cassandra Hemmen and Amanda Shober finished fourth and fifth respectively. Shober jumped 11.01 meters, but was narrowly beat by Hemmen, who jumped 11.02 meters. Marchan nearly scored points as well, but finished ninth. In the shot put, Senior Melanie Brickner finished fifth with a toss of 13.11 meters. Brickner’s teammate and fellow senior, Jecel Klotz, won the shot put competition with a throw of 15.03 meters. Sophmore Lizzy Abhold took ninth place. Brickner finshed in first place in the hammer throw, throwing 58.02 meters. Dorsey said his throwers perferomed well. “Mel Brickner and Jecel Klotz had great days for our throws group,” Dorsey said. “Both are sitting first in the country, Mel in the hammer throw and Jecel in the shot put.” Junior Taylor Sherry had a fantastic day in the heptathlon. She finished in first place with a score of 4,911 points. It was Sherry’s personal best in the event. “It was an unbelievable performance; she set personal bests in six out of the seven events she competed in,” Dorsey said. The Titans compete at Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa from April 23-25.
