The UW Oshkosh baseball team started its slate of games at UW-Stout with three wins and one loss to the Blue Devils April 25-26. “We played very well in the slate of games,” head coach Kevin Tomasiewicz said. “We played a really good series.” The Titans played the first game of their doubleheader this past Saturday and lost 2-5. The pitching power of sophomores Hayden Bowe and Jacob Frederick seemed too much for the Titans. Unfortunately, junior pitcher Peter Jewell took the loss. “As a unit we didn’t play our best game,” Jewell said. “I didn’t have my best stuff, but I battled and tried to give the team the best opportunity to win.” Although Jewell took the loss, he still has only allowed 26 runs and holds a 2.93 ERA. He credits that to his teammates. “Without my teammates making the plays and scoring the runs, I wouldn’t have the ERA I do today,” Jewell said. He says he wishes he could give the team more wins. “Peter is doing well on the season,” Tomasiewicz said. “He is learning how to pitch against the No. 1 pitcher on the opposing team and has unfortunately come on the wrong end.” The Titans didn’t score until the fifth inning, where they scored two runs off of freshman catcher/pitcher Cooper Lang and junior outfielder Robbie Kleman. Freshman outfielder John Eagan and senior outfielder Luke Gajewski each had 1 RBI. “Peter battled the whole game and the offense didn’t do much to help him out,” sophomore infielder Tyler Kozlowski said. “We didn’t get the job done with runners in scoring position.” After the first loss, the Titans came back at 3:40 p.m. and defeated the Blue Devils 10-5. The Titans were down 5-0 before their huge fifth inning where they scored 7 runs. “There was no life in the dugout,” Tomasiewicz said. “The guys got back together, capitalized on [the Blue Devils] mistakes, and became relentless.” Scoring in the fifth inning were Eagan, Kozlowski, Gajewski, Lang, freshman infielder Noah Polcyn, freshman catcher Logan Reckert and freshman first baseman Andy Brahier. “This was a big momentum swing,” Kozlowski said. “They made an error with two outs and we just capitalized on that mistake.” Freshman pitcher Jacob Pohlman took the win. He is now 2-1 and has a 4.66 ERA. The Titans won the next two games in their Sunday doubleheader. The Titans won the first game 4-2. Kozlowski, Brahier, Reckert and Gajewski each scored. Reckert led with 1 RBI. Junior pitcher Ben Messenger took the win and now has a 4.33 ERA. “Everyone contributed to pull out that win,” Kozlowski said. They won their last game 8-5, through the pitching duo of freshmen Jesse Sustachek and Ryan Chancellor. Starting pitcher Sustachek took the win, while relief pitcher Chancellor took the save. Sustachek now is 4-0 and has an ERA of 3.14, while Chancellor is 2-1 with 3 saves and an ERA of 1.20. “It was a good game on both sides,” Chancellor said. “Sustachek pitched a great game for six innings, started to get a little tired and let some guys on base. Coach called on me to shut the door and that’s what I did.” Kozlowski and Reckert led the game with 2 runs each. Kleman led with 2 RBIs. The Titans shutout Lawrence University 7-0 Tuesday April 28th, through the pitching power of junior Adam Rude. Rude played the entire game and only allowed one hit. “Rude played his best game yet,” Tomasiewicz said. The Titans were dominating overall, with Eagan and Brahier, leading with 2 RBIs each. Eagan scored 2 runs. “The guys did a really nice job of jumping on them,” Tomasiewicz said. Chancellor said he is excited with what this team can do for the rest of the season. “For mostly a freshman-sophomore lineup, I’m impressed with our ability to compete,” Chancellor said. The Titans were defeated by Ripon College on Wednesday 5-7, as their comeback win fell short. “We were down early and we started chipping in,” Tomasiewicz said. “After the sixth inning, it was 5-5. We gave up a double and we gave up two runs.” Junior pitcher Phil Spock took his first loss of the season. Tomasiewicz said that great plays didn’t happen and that there would be some problems the guys need to solve in practice. Eagan, Gajewski, Reckert, Paulson and freshman outfielder Conner Funnell scored the runs. Kozlowski led the team in RBIs with 2, with Eagan, Pohlman and Paulson each having 1. Next up for the Titans are their final four games against UW-Platteville. “This should be an exciting series,” Tomasiewicz said. “If we win three out of the four games, we make it to the [Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference] tournament. If we make it, we can hopefully do some damage.” The Titans play the Pioneers of UW Platteville at home this weekend May 2 through May 3 to close out the regular season.
