Women’s golf wins Viking Invite

The UW Oshkosh women’s golf team finished first at the Augustana College Viking Invitational held at the Highland Springs Golf Course in Rock Island, Illinios. The team finished first out of seven teams, including conference opponents UW-Platteville and UW-Whitewater. The Titans won with a total score of 668, which was 92 shots over par. Platteville placed second shooting 101 shots over par. Sophomores McKenzie Paul and Laura Stair led Oshkosh, tying for first place overall with scores of 160. Senior Taylor Wenzel, who finished with a score of 171 and in seventh place overall, is very impressed with the youth of this team. “The team that we have is outstanding,” Wenzel said. “The bond our team shares is a large part of the success, but the talent is remarkable. A young team allows coach Liza [Ruetten] to grow a strong foundation from the start, and also allows her to learn what each player needs to do to stay successful at each tournament.” Stair said the team is close, creating a relaxed environment for them to strive in. “The team works well together, we work off of each other’s positive vibes and are always getting positive boosts such as the well known ‘park-it’, high fives or even just a smile,” Stair said. “We make sure everyone is feeling good and confident in themselves just as much as they are confident in each and every girl on the team. We find success in each other, that’s our motivation… to do well not only for ourselves but for our second family.” Freshman Micayla Richards said Oshkosh is quite pleased with how its season turned out. “Our greatest success this season was to come together as a team, stay focused and learn along the way,” Richards said. Although they are losing key seniors Wenzel and Emily Mallek, Paul said the team has high aspirations for next season. “Our goals for next season are to play steady golf and continue to improve,” Paul said. “Next season, we are hoping to bring home a conference championship.”
