The women’s track and field team is coming off of a solid performance in the 2015 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships at UW-La Crosse this past weekend. The Titans finished the meet with 121 points, which resulted in finishing in third place out of nine teams. Senior Samantha Blue, who jumps and sprints for the team, said she feels like the team’s overall performance in the conference championship meet will propel them in the right direction as they look towards the national championships, held May 21-23. “We had quite a few national qualifying performances this weekend, so it really gets the momentum going into the next few weeks before nationals,” Blue said. Blue said she recognizes the indoor success and how that translated into the outdoor season. “We have had some really good things happen at the beginning of indoor and now we are starting to roll again,” she said. Blue said she takes pride in being part of the UWO track and field program and gives praise to the competitive atmosphere. “Being part of the track and field team here at UWO is hard to put into words; it is an experience that I wouldn’t trade for anything,” Blue said. “It is a lot of work, but being coached and competing with, and against, the best in the nation makes it all worth it.” Senior pole vaulter Stefanie Weber said this year’s team lacks depth, but she is pleased with how well other athletes have risen to the occasion. “Although we lost a few key seniors from last year, I feel that everyone this year did a really good job at stepping up to fill those holes that we needed filled,” Weber said. Weber said the balance of performances has contributed to consistency. “The throws have been the strong point of our team this year, but we have had more talent come from a little bit of everywhere, which is great knowing that we don’t always have to depend on one or two event groups to grab the majority of the points,” Weber said. Senior thrower and sprinter Cassandra Hemmen said she praises the balance of play from all groups. “Oshkosh has always been known for the throws, and yes our throwers are doing well, as they are ranked top in the country, but people from all events have been stepping up and performing well,” Hemmen said. Hemmen said the team’s performance at the Phil Esten Challenge in La Crosse was one of the better performances of the season. “We haven’t had everyone competing at the meets, but as a whole, I think the Phil Esten Challenge at La Crosse was a good meet for the team,” Hemmen said.
