The UW Oshkosh football team spoiled UW-Stout’s homecoming Saturday as they defeated the Blue Devils 69-14. Saturday’s was the third win in a row for the Titans after falling to Robert Morris in their first game of the season. The Titans are now tied for second with UW-Stevens Point in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a conference record of 1-0 and an overall record of 3-1. In the Titans’ very first offensive play following a turnover on downs by Stout to open the game, UWO scored on an 85-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Brett Kasper to wide receiver Sam Mentkowski. The Blue Devils answered that play later in the first quarter as quarterback Hank Kujak connected with wide receiver Brian Alvarez from 13 yards out to tie the game at 7. From then on, it was all UWO in the first half. To finish the first quarter, Kasper found wide receiver Craig Schommer for a 17-yard touchdown. In the second quarter, the Titan defense held Stout scoreless, while the Titan offense scored four touchdowns, raising the score to 41-7 at the half. Three of the four second quarter touchdowns for UWO came on running plays, two from starting running back Dylan Hecker and one from Devon Linzenmeyer. Stout started the second half strong as they were able to force a UWO turnover on downs in the first possession of the half, and score a touchdown of their own to bring them within 41-14 in the third quarter. The comeback attempt by the Blue Devils did not last long as UWO finished the game with 28 unanswered points. Stout’s offense was overwhelmed by the UWO defense as they were forced into a one-dimensional game plan early in the competition. “Stout has a talented offense, we knew that going in,” strong safety Johnny Eagan said. “Early on we made them pretty one-dimensional by limiting their run game. Once we turn our pass rushers loose and drop into coverage, there are not a lot of teams that can beat us that way.” Schommer caught his second touchdown of the day on a pass from backup quarterback Connor Senger. Hecker scored his third rushing touchdown of the day, and then Senger and wide receiver Dom Todarello added two more rushing scores. In the fourth quarter, backups replaced many starters in the blowout. Starting left tackle Sam Versnik said depth is a key part of the Titans’ success. “This is by far the deepest offense I’ve ever played with,” Versnik said. “We have so many weapons at every position. It allows guys to give everything they have on every play and sub out when they’re tired. Then when the backups come in, we don’t miss a beat.” Mentkowski had a career day as he finished with 8 receptions for 209 yards and 2 touchdowns. of my teammates could have a big game at any point,” Mentkowski said. “I have been lucky enough to have been put in good situations the last couple weeks.” Mentkowski did acknowledge that he had a great game. “I do believe that this was my best game as Titan as an individual,” he said. Overall, the Titan offense has been unstoppable lately, scoring an outstanding 190 points over their last three games. Versnik said he believes this offensive line is something special. “I think our size, mixed with our athleticism, is a great combination,” Versnik said. “Every guy on our line has the ability to get out and run in space but can also drive defenders down the field. Experience is also a factor. We played in some really big games last year and returned four starters, so that helps.” Next week may be the biggest challenge thus far for UWO as they will host reigning back-to-back national champion, and undefeated UW-Whitewater at Titan Stadium Saturday, Oct. 10. The Warhawks have not lost a game since October of 2012.
