Men’s track team takes sixth in WIAC championship

The UW Oshkosh men’s track and field team finished sixth in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships on May 1 and 2 with a team score of 80.33. Oshkosh’s lone win of the meet was the 4×400 meter relay. The team of Danny Trimmer, Kallen Bentz, Brian Beaudo and Reid Zanoya won the event with a time of 3 minutes and 13.87 seconds, a full three seconds faster than second place finisher UW-Whitewater. Coach Eamon McKenna said that overall the team were disappointed with the finish. “We were thinking we could compete for top-four,” McKenna said. “It just really didn’t come together for us. We knew that our jumps were down, we definitely need to focus on improving in that area.” Oshkosh had just one top-10 in the jumping events with Devan Gertschen finishing eighth in the pole vault. McKenna said there were things that could have gone better. “Honestly, pretty much everything,” McKenna said. “Except for the 4×400, those guys ran awesome from pretty much start to finish.” Oshkosh had seven top-five finishes in the meet. Naji Allan finished fifth in both the 100-meter and 200-meter dash with times of 10.49 seconds and 21.45 seconds respectively. Beaudo finished third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.34 seconds. He said the weather was an issue during the meet. Beaudo said his performances in the meet were positive but he felt it could have gone a little better. “Definitely thought I could have performed a little better with how I felt,” Beaudo said. “I felt really good through three-quarters of my race and the wind just kind of took over and that kind of put me down a little bit. I was happy with how I felt over the weekend.” Oshkosh recorded five top-10 finishes in throwing events. Scott Heinz finished in the top 10 in each of his throwing events. He finished fourth in the hammer throw with a toss of 177-03, sixth in the discus with a throw of 156-08 and sixth in the shot put with a throw of 51-09. Scott Heinz finished fourth in the discus with a toss of 158-11. Nick Grosskopf finished fifth in the shot put with a toss of 52-09.5. McKenna thought Heinz had a successful meet. “It’s the best conference in the country so for him to score in all three throwing events was really impressive,” McKenna said. “Even if he didn’t hit the marks he was hoping, other than the hammer throw, I think he still left there very pleased.” The rest of Oshkosh’s schedule is filled with qualifiers leading up to the NCAA Div. III championships in Canton, New York the weekend of May 21.
