Take advantage of Oshkosh’s many outdoor activities

With only 5 weeks left in the semester, many students are feeling the stress build up, but with spring weather likely coming soon, students should make sure they are taking advantage of the different activities UW Oshkosh campus has to offer outdoors. Although it may be tough for many students to get out of some traditional stress relieving habits such as binge watching Netflix and overindulging in junk food, there are plenty of fun things for students to do on and around campus to help get their minds off of their heavy workloads. One of the easiest ways to make studying for classes a little more enjoyable is to take it outside. All you need is a large blanket, a charged laptop, school work, and a study buddy to have a successful and refreshing study session in the fresh air. With so many trees on campus, it’s easy to find a nice shady spot to work. And for those who love the sun, why not work on a tan while getting some work done. For those who need to take some time away from the books, as well as relieve some stress, the Student Recreation and Wellness Center offers many outdoor activities. Not many students know, but the SRWC’s website provides several walking and running routes around campus already mapped out marking one, two, or three mile routes. The SRWC also rents out equipment for those who love a little adventure. Students can rent, bikes, kayaks, paddle boards and much more– all for reasonable rates. Students can also take advantage of UWO’s outdoor tennis courts, volleyball courts, and east hall field located on the corner of New York and Wisconsin street. According to Cody, a UWO Rec Center employee, as long as a team isn’t practicing, anyone is able to start a game on these courts. “Personally when it’s really nice out on campus, my friends and I go play catch with a football outside the dorms,” junior Ben Hein said. “You have to take advantage of the warm weather because it doesn’t last very long. Soon it’s going to be below zero again and we all regret not getting out more.” Students should also remember how close campus is to the unique shops and restaurants on Main Street. Some popular places like Satori Imports, which offers an assortment of knick-knacks, and the New Moon Café which offers a variety of food, along with local performances during open mic nights. The best part of all is these places, along with many other shops, restaurants, and bars are they are only a twenty minute walk from campus. For those staying in Oshkosh this summer, Oshkosh’s farmers market is a great way to spend Saturday mornings. With fresh produce, and live music, it is sure to provide a fun filled Saturday morning during the months of June through to October. As Spring approaches, so do more rainy days, so when the sun is out shining make sure to make the most of it. The UWO campus has a great location that offers plenty of opportunities to go on adventures and make memories with friends. Students who take advantage of all that UWO and the city of Oshkosh has to offer during the spring and summer months will surely have more fun than those who lie around the house.
