The flowers are blossoming, the days are getting longer and the semester is nearing the end. The warm weather outside serves as a distraction from responsibilities. However, it is important for students to search for a summer job before the end of the semester. UW Oshkosh offers numerous free services to help students obtain jobs. Before submitting an application, it is important to have an updated, error-free résumé. Career Services offers free consultations to any student. Located on the first floor of the Student Success Center, the office is staffed with advisers who will help students reconstruct their résumé. The advisers teach the necessary tools to create an informative, professional résumé. They also provide interview tips and job search techniques. To meet with one of these advisers a student must schedule an appointment at the front desk of Career Services. Its website also contains résumé templates and a YouTube page with several tips. After the résumé is perfected, a student is ready to apply for a job. Titan Jobs, a website created by UW Oshkosh, displays hundreds of jobs available to students. The search can be refined to search for co-ops, internships or part-time and full-time employment. The search can be further narrowed by a company or field. For example, a marketing student looking for an internship can simply enter these preferences into the advanced search and view all the companies searching for a marketing intern. The page will often list the pay rate, hours expected to work and job qualifications, as well as a link to the application. After searching for a job, applying and receiving a call for an interview, the search is almost complete. However, it is important to do well in the interview. It is the résumé that gets a student in the door but the interview that gets the job. A NBC article titled “Face Value” demonstrates the importance of physical appearance in the workplace. “It does make a difference and most likely always will,” the article said. Through UWO’s Career Closet program, students can obtain professional clothing to wear without emptying their wallets. The clothing ranges from business casual to business professional and is free. The clothing is donated from members of the community, including Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch. The clothes are 100 percent free and do not have to be returned. A student should simply set up an appointment with the Career Closet. There are also drop-in hours for those individuals who are in a hurry. In addition to taking advantage of these free campus services, it is important for students to network to create connections. After all, it is often not what people know but whom they know. Professors can advise students on where to search for jobs. Many also have connections to opportunities. This is why it is necessary to maintain a positive relationship with professors. All of the previously listed tips are free to any student. The many simple-to-use tools that the University provides can help just about anyone looking for a summer job.
